Biggest ever Same Sex Marriage Rallies!
Saturday 14th August saw the biggest demonstrations ever for same sex marriage rights, and for LGBT equality. The marriage rallies, marches and events that took place in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart, Perth and several other centres together involved well over 10,000 people.
The crowd for Melbourne’s march was by far the biggest seen at a same-sex marriage rally this year, with about 6,000 people thronging down Swanston St. In Sydney the crowd doubled from the numbers attracted for the last protest in May – an estimated 2,000 people.
“It’s really not a big deal,” TV presenter Ruby Rose told the huge crowd outside the State Library of Victoria yesterday. “It’s about human rights, it’s about getting rid of discrimination, and treating everyone equally. It’s not just about the law, it’s about letting people love.”
The Equal Love campaign promises to keep up the fight for equal marriage rights following next weekend’s election – the next nationwide ‘day of action’ is planned for Saturday 27 November
